Discover Middelburg during a 4 km walk along the highlights of this historic city. Expect a varied route through intimate alleys, across atmospheric squares and along quiet canals, where stories of trade, religion and power come together.
As the second trading city of the Dutch Republic, Middelburg played an important role in global trade through the VOC and WIC – bringing wealth, shipbuilding and international connections to the city and leaving behind a rich collection of historic monuments.
Take the time to look up at the façades and towers, listen – if you are lucky – to the carillon of the Lange Jan, and feel free to pause for a photo or a cup of coffee. Here you can sense how global trade and maritime activity shaped the city for centuries.
Arriving by car? Follow the parking route to one of the official parking areas. The best place to park is P1 – Hof van Tange (paid parking). This parking area is also suitable for camper vans up to 6 metres. From here it is less than a five‑minute walk to the first point of interest, the Kloveniersdoelen.
Coming by bicycle? Park it in the bicycle racks opposite the Kloveniersdoelen or in the guarded bicycle parking Markt (located at Zusterplein). This bicycle parking is indicated on the cycling wayfinding signs when you approach the city centre.
